Basic Math Brush-Up If you’re thinking of going back to school or taking a Learner’s test and would like to brush-up on your math skills, this class will help. The course covers operations with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, proportion, operations with signed numbers, and beginning algebra and geometry. Intro to Cake Decorating It's the perfect way to get into the fun of decorating! Learn to ice a cake perfectly smooth with our foolproof hints as well as how to use  popular techniques such as basketweave, pattern presses, flowers and figure piping to create an impressive decorated cake. Basic Residential Wiring Learn electrical energy fundamentals, electric circuit theory, electrical circuit components, tools for the electrician, safety and grounding essentials, and various types of wiring systems.   Tues, Jan 13-Mar 3 8:30-11:30 am or 4:30-7:30 pm
Intro to Stained Glass Learn the basics of stained glass including elementary stained glass cutting, how to read and assemble patterns, & the safe use of equipment. Students will make a stained glass panel in class. Tues, Jan 13-Feb 17 8:30-11:00 am or 4:30-7:300 pm
Landscape Yourself Learn to landscape your own home. Class will cover how to layout bed lines, edgings, gravel vs. mulch, plants and spacing. Get a head start on spring! Tues, Jan 13-27 8:30-10:30 am or 4:30-6:30 pm
Time Management Learn how to manage your time instead of it managing your life.  Class will focus on how to become more organized and productive, how to better manage your daily planning, and how to stay in focus in spite of everyday obstacles and distractions. Locksmithing This two day seminar will offer students four levels of locksmithing instruction in four separate classes. On the first day the morning session will cover Locksmithing I and the afternnon session will cover Locksmithing II. On the second day the morning session will cover Locksmithing III and the afternoon session will cover Locksmithing IV. Each student may decide which class or classes they wish to take. Locksmithing I will cover locksmithing shimming and how to disassemble, repin, and reassemble various locks.  Locksmithining II will cover the tools of the trade. Locksmithing III will cover office locks, commericail grade locks, high security locks, and understanding the basics of a Locksmithing business. Government Employment Workshop If you think you might want to work after retirement, this class will teach the “how to’s” of how to get full-time or part-time government employment. Students will get their application completed according to government standards, and learn the correct way to apply for government jobs after they retire, from former government instructors. This workshop is open to all Steelworkers.  Spouses may attend with the Steelworker if seats are available. Wed & Thurs        Jan 21 & 22 8:30-11:30 am or 4:30-7:30 pm
HVAC-Standard Refrigeration Technology This class will prepare students to take the EPA Section 608 Certification Exam in HVAC.  Class will cover the fundamentals of refrigeration, refrigeration components, metering devices, PM repairs & troubleshooting systems, fundamentals of electricity, and evacuation and reclamation of A/C systems.  This class is open to Active Steelworkers only and will be taught at the Learning Center.   Wed, Jan 21-Mar 25 8:30-11:30 am or 4:30-7:30 pm
Woodcarving Workshop This workshop will provide students at all skill levels the opportunity to work on skill appropriate woodcarving projects. All students will learn how to use & handle wood carving tools safely.  All woodcarvers are welcome. Please register no later than January 9 for this class. Wellness Series-Combined Yoga & Pilates  In this class, students will continue to learn Yoga, the ancient practice in which you learn to integrate the basic yoga principles of alignment, breath work, and meditation as well as add some core building techniques from Pilates. Advanced Investments-Options  This class will help take the mystery out of options by providing students with the basic knowledge needed to execute basic stock and commodity options trades. Landscaping-Annuals  & Perennials Learn how to choose and plant the best annuals and perennials for our hot, humid part of the country, how to integrate old and new annuals and perennials into your garden, and the how and when of effective watering and fertilizing. How to Start & Run a Small Business This class will help students answer four key questions relevant to small business success. (1) Am I ready to be a business owner? (2) Does my business idea make good business sense? (3) Does my business idea make good market sense? (4) Does my business idea make good financial sense?  Students also learn how to prepare a Business Plan and where to find other resources to assist in the development of their business ideas.  Wed, Feb 4-25 8:30-11:30 am or 4:30-7:30 pm
Intro to Altered Books An altered book is a form of mixed media artwork that changes a book from its original form into a different form. In this class, students will explore the many fascinating techniques for altering a paper surface, specifically books.  Collage, frottage, stenciling, lettering, stamping, basic book making, etc. will be explored using a variety of materials.  Thurs, Feb 5-Mar 12 8:30-10:30 am or 4:30-6:30 pm
Landscaping-Grow Native Plants Learn about the popular plants native to the area. You will learn which native plants make good landscape plants, the different needs of woodland and sun natives, as well as the myths and old legends surrounding some native plants. How to Use a Financial Calculator In this class students will learn to use an HP financial calculator for business and finance needs.  Learn how to easily calculate loan payments, interest rates and conversions, standard deviation, percent, TVM, NPV, IRR, cash flows, and more.  Thurs Feb 26-Mar 5 8:30-10:30 am or 4:30-6:30 pm
How to Install & Repair
Ceramic Tile
This class will teach students how to plan and complete a ceramic tile project for their homes. Class will cover choosing and installing backer board, choosing, laying, cutting, installing, and grouting new tile as well as the repair and replacement of exiting tile. Basic Sewing Learn the basics of operating a sewing machine.  Class topics include: how to thread, set tension, load bobbins, sew, and use various other features on a new sewing machine. Basic Residential Wiring II This class is a continuation of the Level 1 class. Retirement Redzone The Retirement Red Zone is defined as the critical time period in investors' lives that is the five years before and five years after retirement. Retirement is the dream of hard-working Americans everywhere. But what would happen if a sharp market decline occurred just as you prepared to draw income from your retirement nest egg? You can least afford to lose any part of your principal during The Retirement Red Zone. Landscaping-Veggie & Herb Gardening One of the best ways to save money and exercise is gardening. If you are a first time gardener or an experienced gardener just wanting more information, this class will help you.  Class covers: best planting times, plant spacing, plant feeding, plant care (bugs and diseases), harvest, and recipes. Wellness Series-Dierberg’s School of Cooking Cooking wholesome nutritious food at home reduces your food bill and your waist line. Small Engine Repair 4 Cycle This course is designed to teach students how to repair and maintain gas powered tools that use four-cycle motors. This class is open to Active Steelworkers only and will be taught at the Learning Center.  Thurs, Mar 19-May 7 8:30-11:30 am or 4:30-7:30 pm
Budgeting This workshop will give students an overview of how to develop and follow a budget, how to establish and maintain a savings plan, as well as look at credit reports and debt management. Basics of Investments-Level I This course will teach students to understand the language of investments, the types of investments available, the benefits and risks of the different types of investments, how to maximize retirement assets, investing in stocks, and investing for rising income. Intro to Quilting Students will learn machine quilting both as an productive hobby and a potential small business.  Topics include: types of quilts, fabric and pattern selection, math for quilters, and the use of quilting tools. Intro to Spanish Learn to speak and understand the Spanish that is used in daily life.  This class does not get bogged down in teaching grammar and punctuation.  This is an interactive hands-on learning experience.  Students will learn how to “say” practical common phrases and questions in Spanish. Understanding Antiques & Collectibles This course will teach you how to discern the junk from the diamonds in the rough. You will learn how to recognize valuable items even before you know exactly what they are, how to quickly research items you have found, and how to find the best way to sell at a profit.  Wed, Apr 1-22 8:30-10:30 am or 4:30-6:30 pm

Steelworkers-Our Stories In an ever-changing world, we often find happiness in special memories from our family, work, school, or just life in general. These memories warm our hearts and sustain us through difficult times. In this class, each student will capture one or two of these special memories from their own life and  put it on video to share with family and friends. Class will include learning how to capture and script these memories as well as how to present them on video. No previous writing or video experience is necessary. with Your Digital Camera
Got a digital camera and wonder what the various settings mean? Sign up for this class to get you and your camera ready for taking great photos.  The instructor will check your camera for proper settings and work with you to de-mystify your digital camera.
